Some Tips on Buying Watches Online

If you happen to be in the market for buying watches online, don’t worry, it really is a great place to look. You can be sure to find inexpensive watches, as well as luxury brands online. Also, you will also be able to find new and used, authentic and replica, and, unfortunately, fake watches.
I have no doubt you would have heard all those horror stories about people getting completely ripped off trying to buy a Rolex for $1,000, on eBay, or anywhere else on the Internet. To begin with, scams such as this did not originate online, and just like in a traditional marketplace, there many things you can do to help protect yourself. Secondly, there are several instances where greedy and just plain ignorant consumers carelessly get involved fraudulent deals, and then complain they have been ripped off. You must remember that there are scammers everywhere, and they aren’t that hard to spot if you put in a little effort. Remember the old adage – “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!”
Don’t expect to buy an Omega Timepiece for $300m, and how could you possibly want to? The whole point of buying more expensive, more sophisticated watches, is that they are an accurate representation of where you are in life. If you can’t afford that bright, shiny new watch just yet, it doesn’t matter. A nice watch such as a Tissot, might be better suited to your current financial situation in your life. When it does come time to invest $50,000 on your wrist, those watches will be right there waiting for you!
Anyway, let’s get right to it, and learn what not to do first when buying watches online.
- Never buy a “Rolex” that is valued at tens of thousands of dollars for a thousand dollars, and hope that the seller has no idea what he or she is doing. There is no doubt that you are the fool.
- Never buy luxury watches online from someone who doesn’t have a good reputation. If you are unable to speak to someone on the phone, or you have that nagging feeling deep inside of you, be sure to look elsewhere. It’s plain common sense. Be sure to do your due diligence and check out the seller’s guarantee and return policy, and you’ll also want to see if they are a member of any accredited organisations.
- Never buy a watch from a website that has no purchase protection. Websites such as PayPal and eBay both have measures to ensure that any fraudulent sales can be resolved quickly. Thankfully, eBay is one of the safest places to process an online transaction. Also, you’ll be able to check out a sellers’ feedback.
Although the above advice might seem pretty straightforward, you would be very surprised at how many cases of fraud could have been avoided if the above three steps had been followed. Furthermore, counterfeiting in the watch industry can tend to scare off customers from shopping for watches online. Once again, adhering to the above three tips, as well as keeping in mind the company’s return policy, is a god way of protecting yourself.
The good news is that the best fakes can easily be found out, and all it takes is a call to the manufacturer who can check the serial numbers. Again, this is why you should take notice of the watches guarantee, and especially the period of time you have to return the watch. You will want to have enough time to be able to bring your watch to an objective watch store, and/or call the company itself to find out the serial number. You would definitely be doing the same thing if you were purchasing your watch from a retailer, who wasn’t an authorized dealer.
This then brings us to the advantage of buying something such as a Swiss watch online. To put it simply, the biggest advantage you have is the price. You will be able to save 25-30% from buying watches online, compared to an authorized dealer, or perhaps a regular jewelry store. In saying that, online retailers have less overheads, which allows them to pass on the savings to the consumer. Unfortunately, authorized dealers do not sell online, and the manufacturers very rarely sell watches online directly. This means that the best way to buy luxury watches online is through a reputable seller. If there is a problem with your purchase, as long as you can return it, I would recommend taking the savings.
