Looking Handsome: Our Self-Care Guide for Men

Now that self-care for men is becoming more mainstream, it’s hard to find a boy with cooties these days. CNBC estimates that the men’s personal care market is booming, projected to reach $166 billion by 2022.

A GUIDE TO LOOKING HANDSOME AT ANY AGE
As you get into your 30’s and 40’s, your skin begins to show the signs of aging. No stress, though, because a good self-care strategy can help you feel and look younger. Here are our top tips for looking handsome at any age.
Male Hygiene
Maintaining proper hygiene is essential to your health. Yet, studies show that men are 46% less likely to practice good hygiene when they aren’t in the presence of others.
Need a little convincing that hygiene keeps you healthy? Here are the top personal hygiene practices you should be doing every day, plus why they matter.
- Washing the Body: Ideally, you should take a shower every day because washing the body often helps you stay free of infection-causing germs
- Brushing Teeth: It’s best to brush your teeth after every meal but cleaning them once per day is typically sufficient to kill disease-causing mouth bacteria
- Washing Hands: You should always wash your hands after using the restroom and before prepping meals to avoid ingesting germs that will make you sick
- Washing Clothes: Frequently washing clothes gets rid of the germs and parasites that we pick up throughout a busy day

Male Grooming
Hygiene is vital to your health, but it isn’t enough on its own to keep you looking handsome as you age. You also need to practice good grooming habits.
For example, make sure you’re washing your face twice daily. You should be using a real facial cleanser, not that bar of soap that can strip your skin of essential moisture. Washing your face will keep it free of acne-causing bacteria while choosing nourishing cleansers will help prevent premature wrinkles.
Flossing and shaving are two other daily grooming habits to get into. Meanwhile, you only need to clip your nails and, if you’re into it, manscape once or twice a week.
Male Fitness
Fitness isn’t about looking like a bodybuilder; it’s about keeping your body in the best condition possible. Getting regular daily exercise can help improve your mood and sleep now while reducing your risk for cardiovascular disease and other conditions later.

Keep in mind that strength training doesn’t have to mean lifting weights. You could also use resistance bands or bodyweight exercises like pushups, squats, and crunches.
Mental Health for Men
Did you know that men are less likely to be diagnosed with a mental health condition than women? It’s not because mental health conditions are more prevalent in women. Men are just less likely to seek care and, therefore, a formal diagnosis.
For this reason, it’s even more vital that you take care of your mental health. Poor mental health can cause a domino effect, impacting other aspects of self-care. For example, poor hygiene is often a symptom of depression, and poor hygiene, in turn, can cause you to develop diseases you wouldn’t have otherwise.
Staying active and eating well goes a long way to keeping your mind healthy. Talking to a trusted partner or friend, practicing deep breathing or meditation, and taking up yoga are all ways to keep your stress levels low and your brain feeling strong.

Nutrition for Men
According to the Academy of Dietitians and Nutritionists:
2–3 cups of veggies per day
Half of your daily intake of grains should be whole grains
Fiber: 38 grams or more for men aged 20 to 50 and 30 grams or more for men aged 50 and older
2–3 servings of fatty fish per week
Replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats
Why You Should Only Use Natural and Organic Beauty Products

Organic beauty products are now the standard for most women who are concerned about sustainable living and also natural care. Lots of other women choose natural beauty products or organic beauty products to avoid damaging ingredients and chemicals. There is a whole debate going on right now about the aluminum in deodorants, for example. But it is not just about this. Also, the preservatives and the parabens used in cosmetic products have been associated in some cases with different types of cancer. More than this, some people are simply allergic to the perfume used in most cosmetic products. Hence, they need to get organic beauty products way.

Natural beauty products
If you often choose to buy products marked as “all-natural,” the chances are that you get about 2% organic ingredients, and the rest are similar to the products without the natural label. The term natural used for beauty products can have different connotations, and there are no strict regulations for when the manufacturers are allowed to use it or not. In this case, the best thing to do is to read the label carefully. This way, you know exactly what you are getting. And if the list of chemical products is longer than the natural ingredients, maybe you should choose something else. Due to the extensive usage of the terms organic, bio, and natural, there is a lot of confusion around them. You might think that organic, bio, and natural are the same thing. This is not correct.
Organic beauty products
The beauty products you buy labeled as “organic” need to follow strict guidelines such as:
- They need to be certified by an accreditation organization. The mark “organic” should be present on the label of the beauty product, together with the logo of the organization, which made the certification.
- An organic beauty product very rarely has an expiration date longer than six months after opening. Also, keep in mind that storage conditions might be different and more strict compared to natural beauty products. This is the case because natural preservatives are used to conserve it.
On the label of an organic beauty product, you should also find mentions such as no parabens, no silicone, no paraffin, no colorants, and not tested on animals, among others.
Benefits of natural and organic beauty products

So, why should you always choose organic or natural when it comes to your beauty products? Before anything else, you should know that these products are ideal for sensitive skin or skin with different conditions such as rosacea or prone to acne. The natural and organic products have less (or none) chemical ingredients that can trigger allergies, rashes, and irritations. Hence they are better for your skin and your health. Also, associated with less allergic reactions. These products are ideal for young skin and as a start of your beauty routine in your 20s, for example. Also, for dry and mature skin, they can provide the much-needed hydration without causing more harm to the skin.
If you have to choose in between organic beauty products and natural beauty products, always go for the first category. However, either organic or natural is better than the products containing a high percentage of chemical ingredients.
Zero Cost Banking from Gov. Newsome!

Sacramento, CA —On Oct. 4, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation paving the way for a new public banking system in California.
AB 1177, known as the ‘California Public Banking Option Act’, creates a zero-penalty, zero-fee, and zero-minimum-balance platform for basic financial services.
These services include direct deposit from employers and public benefits, automatic bill pay to registered payees, recurring payments and donations to account holders’ organizations or charities of choice, and an infrastructure to support account holders in building credit.

“AB 1177 will help Californians stay protected from overdraft fees and penalties and give them an opportunity to save money and build wealth while fighting the racial wealth gap,” said Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), lead author of the bill.
“California is leading the nation’s public banking movement and we must keep working to provide no-fee banking services to all Californians,” he added.
Santiago wrote the bill with the intention to help close the financial services gap that leaves 1 in 4 Californians unbanked or underbanked. Modeled after the state’s public retirement program CalSavers, the bill forms a commission of representatives from the Treasurer’s office, the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, financial access experts and community members to oversee market analysis on how the program should be implemented.
Proponents of public banking in California say Wall Street banks have failed low-income communities, particularly people of color. They also say the banks will provide easier access to capital that will be critical to helping small businesses and neighborhoods rebound after the pandemic.
“Financial exclusion and scarcity have been a tool for oppression, discrimination and systemic inequity for too long. Public banking options such as BankCal, along with new technology that allows for free exchange over the internet, are urgently needed to decentralize power, privilege and financial control,” said Briana Marbury, Executive Director of the Interledger Foundation, a non-profit that advocates for standards and technologies that support an open and integrated global financial system.
Opponents of the bill believe that government-owned banks open the door for corruption and that the cost of any mismanagement of funds will come out of taxpayers’ pockets.
A 2015 article published by the Cato Institute critiques past public banking projects, highlighting shortcomings and failures.
Mark A. Calabria, who was chief economist to Vice President Pence and former director of the Federal Housing and Finance Agency authored the article.
He cites devastating losses Germany’s public banks suffered during the sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2008.
Calabria also points to public banking failures closer to home.
“The recent history of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, quasi? public banks at the federal level, illustrates that mismanagement and corruption are alive and well at the intersection of the public and private,” he wrote.
However, Trinity Tran, co-founder of the California Public Banking Alliance, argues instead that AB1177 does not create a new bank but “creates a statewide retail banking option trough which every California worker can access zero-cost services.”
While California is known for its groundbreaking legislation, it will not be the first state with a banking system like this. North Dakota’s public banking system was founded back in 1919.
Marbury believes that the bill is only the first step toward a more broader initiative that would revolutionize accessibility to financial growth and equality.
“This is an exciting development, but not far-reaching enough. Public banking initiatives should be introduced in other states across the US to ensure equal access to financial services for the most vulnerable sectors of our population while elevating the economic health of society as a whole,” she said.
In addition, global financial inclusion should encompass both “brick and mortar” bank access for everyone and a more inclusive internet,” she added.Previous PostCal Black Caucus Gives Thumbs Up to Law Reforming Courtroom SentencingABOUT POST AUTHOR
